The 2009 Teenznet ICT camp captioned: “ICT in Telecommunication” took place at St Peter Clever Seminary, Okpala in Owerri, the “Eastern Heartland of Nigeria”. This venue was an alternative one as it had to be changed from Bauchi to Owerri as a result of the Boko Haram crisis.
The camp brought together 54 children from the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
Also present at the camp were facilitators whose responsibility was to oversee and guide the children throughout their stay at the camp.
The teenz arrived the camp on the 14th of August, 2009 and were registered and settled in on arrival. They were prepared for the task ahead by adhering to the Camp Time-Table (see camp program overview).
The (Opening Ceremony) of the Camp which took place at the Imo Concord Hotel on the 17th of August, 2009.
The ocassion was graced by the Imo State Governor, represented by; Mr. Obi Uchendu, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on ICT; Mr. Obi Ohakim, The Governor’s son; Prof. C. Akujor, the Guest Speaker who was represented by Mr Oluwasogo Ogungbenro; the Director of ICT, Federal University of Technology, Owerri represented by Prof. F.O.U. Osuala; the Director of Centre for Continuing Education, Mr. Kelechi Okere; the National Coordinator eradic Malaria & Motivational Speaker, Miss Apolonia Chiagoro; Welfare Officer, Nigeria Prisons Umuahia, Miss Sylvia Anyado and other guests. The teenz had a fun-filled day.
During the course of the Camp, the teenz went on an (excursion) to AfriHub, FUTO Centre, Owerri, located within the Premises of Federal University of Technology, Owerri where they were exposed to the recent trends in ICT and had the opportunity to visit and log onto an e-library of well known universities all around the world.
This was followed by some entertainment from the Imo State Centre for Arts & Culture during which a colourful drama and dance was presented to the delighted audience of teenz. Also, they were educated on Igbo traditions & culture.
Also included in the activities of the Camp were some extracurricular activities such as Sports, Social events, Career and Leadership programmes.
In the bid to develop the teenz in all aspects of life, they were put through a series of programmes, including ICT training classes during which the participants competed for awards. These awards were given to deserving teenz at the Closing Ceremony by Mr. Medad Onyedinma, the Park Manager of AfriHub, FUTO and other dignitaries at the event on the 25th of August, 2009.
The Participants departed on the 26th of August, 2009 for their various regions in the care of their Teachers and Guardians.
Through this forum, we would like to acknowledge and thank all of the establishments who made this year’s TeenzNet ICT Camp a success; the Governor and Government of Bauchi state for agreeing to partner with us in hosting the 2009 TeenzNet ICT camp, Dangote Group for opting to sponsor the feeding of the teenz, Yankari Games Reserve and a host of others.
Although, we eventually did not get to work together due to the change of venue, we hope to host one of our camps in your State in the not-too-distant future.
Last but not the least, we acknowledge and thank the Governor and Government of Imo State who came to our rescue in the event of the sudden change of venue and other supporters such as the Vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, De United Foods, makers of delicious Indomie noodles, AfriHub FUTO, Owerri, Imo centre for Arts and Culture, St Peter Clever seminary for providing the venue for the Camp, Radio Nigeria, Owerri and a host of others who made it possible for us to host a successful 2009 TeenzNet ICT camp. |
